Colorectal Laparoscopic Simulation Training Programme

Course Overview

The Colorectal Laparoscopy Simulation Training Programme is a structured, skills-focused course designed to develop technical proficiency in laparoscopic colorectal surgery through high-fidelity simulation. The programme emphasizes stepwise acquisition of core and advanced laparoscopic skills, including suturing, stapling, anastomosis, colonic mobilisation, and rectal dissection.

Using simulation platforms, participants practice standardized procedural workflows for right, left, and transverse colectomies, anterior resection, TME, rectopexy, and stoma-related procedures in a controlled, reproducible environment. Anatomical orientation, medial-to-lateral and lateral-to-medial approaches, splenic flexure mobilisation, and troubleshooting of intraoperative challenges are integral components. This simulation-based approach enables deliberate practice, error recognition, and technique refinement, preparing participants for safe translation of skills into the operating room.

Learning Objectives
  • Understand the principles, ergonomics, and operating room setup for colorectal laparoscopy within a simulation environment
  • Acquire foundational laparoscopic skills including suturing, knotting, and use of energy devices and staplers
  • Learn standardized, stepwise approaches for colonic and rectal mobilisation, resection, and reconstruction
  • Interpret anatomical landmarks and operative planes relevant to colorectal surgery during simulated procedures
  • Appreciate procedural options, indications, and technical limitations of advanced laparoscopic colorectal operations
Learning Methodology
  • High-fidelity laparoscopic simulators and colorectal task trainers
  • Structured skill stations for suturing, stapling, and anastomosis
  • Step-by-step procedural simulations mapped to each course module
  • Faculty-guided hands-on training with real-time performance feedback
  • Video-assisted demonstrations and annotated procedural walkthroughs
  • Scenario-based simulations for complication management and troubleshooting
  • Faculty-led debriefing sessions focusing on error analysis and skill refinement
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in laparoscopic suturing, intracorporeal stapling, and anastomotic techniques on simulation platforms
  • Perform simulated right, left, and transverse colectomies using medial-to-lateral and lateral-to-medial approaches
  • Execute rectal mobilisation, transection, and anastomosis, including TME, in a structured simulated setting
  • Manage simulated scenarios involving rectal prolapse, stoma creation, and parastomal hernia repair
  • Apply troubleshooting strategies to address technical errors and intraoperative challenges during simulated colorectal procedures
